Qatar’s showing solid real GDP growth of 3.7% in the first quarter of 2025, with almost two thirds coming from the non-hydrocarbon sector. On the other hand, long-term foundations of trust are being laid: in institutions, in electronic services, and in the rules of the game for small and medium-sized businesses.
Economic Growth And The New Role Of SMEs
At the macroeconomics level, the picture looks impressive. The real estate market has shown the best dynamics since 2020: the volume of transactions reaches 8.9 billion Qatari riyals, which means an increase of 29.8% compared to the previous year. On the global stage, Qatar immediately rises to 21st position in the ranking of foreign direct investment and takes 12th place, almost doubling the number of projects. Within the country, small and medium-sized enterprises are becoming the key beneficiaries of these processes. Of the 25,000 private companies, as many as 96% belong to SMEs, and government policy is gradually turning towards them. Back in 2016, they received about 300 million rials through the public procurement system, and already in 2017 700 million rials, that is, more than twice as much. At one of the specialized exhibitions, over 2,000 opportunities worth about 6.5 billion riyals were offered to businesses, and ministry forecasts say that in the coming years, up to 90% of supplies for government projects can be provided by local companies. This is how diversification ceases to be a slogan and turns into a measurable process.
Digital Identity, Data Protection, And Trust In Services
However, modern growth is impossible without a trust infrastructure. The focus is on the National Strategy for Digital Authentication and Trust Services 2024-2026, based on the idea of a single digital identity. Citizens and organizations no longer need to create dozens of separate accounts: a single access scheme simplifies interaction with public and private services, reduces costs and increases convenience, especially when managing elements like a qatar domain name alongside other digital records.
But convenience is worth little without security. Therefore, much attention is paid to data protection, transparent processing rules and the rights of subjects. All this creates an environment in which electronic services become familiar and, most importantly, a reliable tool for businesses and citizens.
Energy Transition, Decent Work And Human Capital
The topic of trust goes far beyond numbers and technology. The energy transition plays an important role. The first $2.5 billion sovereign green bond issue supports projects in the fields of renewable energy, water resources, and sustainable construction. Large solar facilities already provide up to 15% of peak energy consumption, and the strategic goal is more than 4,000 megawatts of renewable capacity by 2030. This not only reduces Qatar’s emissions, but also strengthens its reputation as a responsible participant in the global economy, where overall growth is projected to slow from 3.2% to 3.0% in 2025.
At the same time, sustainability is understood more broadly than energy. A new norm is gradually forming in the labor market: decent work, non-discrimination, attention to the psychological well-being of employees, developed mediation and conflict resolution mechanisms. For the younger generations, not only income and stability are important, but also a sense of justice, transparent rules, and the opportunity to develop. For many years, the country has held the status of the most peaceful in the region, holding this position for 17 consecutive years and attracting 2.6 million tourists in the first half of 2025 alone.
Economic growth, support for SMEs, the development of a unified digital identity, stringent data protection standards, accelerated energy transition and a new culture of decent work are working together. And the more tightly these elements are intertwined, the higher the chance that trust in government, business, and technology will become not a vulnerable privilege, but a sustainable resource for many years to come.
